Public transport becomes safer but fatalities soar | Bangkok Post: news


No deaths from public transport were recorded during this Songkran's "Seven Dangerous Days", Department of Land Transport (DLT) chief Sanith Phromwong said. The director-general made the comments in a press conference Thursday, joined by representatives from public transport operators, including private companies and the Transport Co Ltd, which operate the country's provincial buses and vans. Mr Sanith said there were a total of six injuries from 15 accidents concerning public transport vehicles during the Seven Dangerous Days, lasting from April 11-17. DLT reports say there were seven deaths on public transport last Songkran nationwide with all of the casualties resulting from vehicles colliding with public buses and vans. "What [is needed to] improve the situation is for everyone to observe responsibility while driving, including public transport operators."
